About

Hello to you all! My name is Gareth Perkins and I'm a professional naturalist, avid birder, and amateur nature photographer.

I've been immersed in the natural world from an early age and can trace my interest in the natural world back to the family trips I went on all over New England and the United States. I've been a bird lover since I was four years old after watching a European blackbird (Turdus merula) fly out of our back garden in Dinas Powys in Wales. These experiences eventually inspired me to complete a four year degree in wildlife at Unity College in Unity, Maine and led to the eventual creation of this blog. While updates have been sporadic in the past, my hope is to inspire others to get outside and explore their own natural areas close to home.

This blog started as a birding blog and focused partially on a side project of mine called the "Babe Ruth of Ornithology"; a tournament meant to decide who was the greatest ornithologist that has ever lived. Eventually this gave way to other topics such as foraging, fishing, wildlife watching, and contemplation about the natural world.

The name "Nature Note: The Adventures of a Northeastern Naturalist" came about after spending a few years working as an outdoor educator at home in Massachusetts, as well as in New Jersey, Maine, and Pennsylvania. In the past year or so, I have lived in New York, Massachusetts, Maine, and now North Carolina and while my scenery has changed significantly, my commitment to sharing my outdoor experiences hasn't and my interest in exploring under appreciated areas of nature study and documentation continues to grow.

If you appreciate good writing, interesting outdoor experiences, and a touch of good humor, you'll find something to enjoy as you explore my experiences of nature and beyond.
